The H2 density within spiral and irregular galaxies at high redshift: estimating CO detection limits

چکیده

We have computed a grid of chemical evolution models for a large set of spiral and irregular theoretical galaxies of different total mass. In our models, the gas phase has two components, the diffuse and the molecular one (H2). It is possible, therefore, to follow the time (or redshift) evolution of the expected density of the H2 phase. We will show the predictions of this gas density at hight redshift, which might be detected with ALMA, in this type of galaxies.

Molecular Gas in Galaxies

Knowledge of the molecular component of the ISM is fundamental to understand star formation. The H2 component appears to dominate the gas mass in the inner parts of galaxies, while the HI component dominates in the outer parts. Observation of the CO and other lines in normal and starburst galaxies have questioned the CO-to-H2 conversion factor, and detection of CO in dwarfs have shown how sensi...

Efficient Star Formation in M 33

The Star Formation (SF) rate in galaxies is an important parameter at all redshifts and evolutionary stages of galaxies. In order to understand the increased SF rates in intermediate redshift galaxies one possibility is to study star formation in local galaxies with properties frequently found at this earlier epoch like low metallicity and small size. We present sensitive observations of the mo...

The ultraviolet visibility and quantitative morphology of galactic disks at low and high redshift

We have used ultraviolet (200 nm) images of the local spiral galaxies M 33, M 51, M 81, M 100, M 101 to compute morphological parameters of galactic disks at this wavelength: half-light radius rhl, surface brightness distributions, asymmetries (A) and concentrations (CA). The visibility and the evolution of the morphological parameters are studied as a function of the redshift. The main results...

CO interferometry of gas-rich spiral galaxies in the outskirts of an intermediate redshift cluster

We present IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer 3 mm observations of CO J(1→0) emission in two 24μm-selected starburst galaxies in the outskirts (∼2–3Rvirial) of the rich cluster Cl 0024+16 (z = 0.395). The galaxies’ inferred far-infrared luminosities place them in the luminous infrared galaxy class (LIRGs, LFIR > 10L⊙), with star formation rates of ∼60M⊙ yr. Strong CO J(1→0) emission is detecte...

Detection of Emission from the Cn Radical in the Cloverleaf Quasar at Z=2.56

We report the detection of CN(N=3→2) emission towards the Cloverleaf quasar (z = 2.56) based on observations with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer. This is the first clear detection of emission from this radical at high redshift. CN emission is a tracer of dense molecular hydrogen gas (n(H2) > 10 4 cm) within star–forming molecular clouds, in particular in regions where the clouds are af...
